On 15 May 2012 Media Globe Krokus (MGK), as organiser of the Moscow International Furniture Show, and Koelnmesse signed a letter of intent. The joint aim is to establish a furniture trade fair with an international format in Moscow from 2013.

“For Koelnmesse this collaboration will be of great mutual benefit and represents an important step forward in internationalisation”, explains Gerald Böse, CEO at Koelnmesse. “Under the name ‘Rooms Moscow’ we will create a trade fair format aimed at the Russian market within the Moscow International Furniture Show. In doing so, we will bring in all the relevant furnishing areas of our globally leading trade fairs imm cologne, LivingKitchen, ORGATEC, spoga+gafa and interzum”, Böse continues. The range on show will span upholstery, storage furniture and office furniture, as well as furniture for contract business, for the outdoor area and for the kitchen.

Rooms Moscow should provide visitors with an overview of designs for rooms, including interior fittings, floors, walls, ceilings, lighting and bath and spa solutions. This new trade fair provides a platform for companies across the world seeking access to the Russian market.

“We feel very much at home!” could easily be the title of a recent study conducted by Emnid on behalf of interlübke. Leo Lübke, managing director of the renowned producer of top-quality furniture made in Germany, can certainly feel vindicated as far as his corporate philosophy is concerned – especially when it comes to issues like the living room as the focal point of life, quality, the design and functionality of the company’s furniture or even its distribution system.

The representative opinion survey interlübke commissioned to mark its 75th anniversary – “Germany in private – Germans’ homes and lives in 2012” – revealed that Germans like to live in light, upscale surroundings and – besides their partners – consider brochures and a personal sales consultation at the furniture store the best sources of advice. They also set great store by enduring furniture and are not particularly keen on change.

In several respects, Germany can be described as the country for furniture – as is also reflected in the development of the imm cologne. The event has returned to its former strength and has been reporting a steady increase in attendance figures since 2009. This is due on the one hand to a trade fair platform that has proved its worth and on the other to the stable economic situation and high demand for furnishings within the Federal Republic.

“For many years now, this trade fair has been an absolute must, even if there are a few weaker years behind us,” explains Frank Haubold, Vice President Trade Fair Management at Koelnmesse. “In 2012, we were once again able to welcome a lot of first-time exhibitors to the imm cologne – young, up-and-coming companies who saw their presence at the trade fair as a way of gaining a stronger foothold in Germany and Europe. But it wasn’t only new providers who came to Cologne: a lot of firmly established manufacturers returned as well – precisely because the German furniture show enjoys such a good reputation and, in recent years, has been able to improve its standing even further.”

Translated into figures, this means an increase from 948 exhibiting companies in 2009 to no fewer than 1,159 this year. In addition, the number of visitors grew by 15% to approx. 115,000 in the same period.

Assessment after imm cologne 2012: The furniture and interior design sector booms, positive expectations for imm cologne 2013

Koelnmesse can look back on a very successful imm cologne 2012. In addition to the trade fair organizer’s well-rounded concept, this success was also due to other reasons, according to Dr. Lucas Heumann, Chief Executive of the Trade Associations of the Wood and Furniture Industry: “On the whole, Koelnmesse has understood the exhibitors’ wishes and implemented them in a series of flexible and customized offers. However, this success is also due to the overall economic situation. The market in the German-speaking countries, which is addressed by the core of the exhibitors in Cologne, is almost the only one in Europe in which consumers are currently showing an increasing tendency to buy.” As a result, a survey conducted by Koelnmesse GmbH shows that the exhibitors of imm cologne 2012 provided extremely positive feedback 100 days after the fair.

Many exhibitors have full order books more than three months after the end of the sector’s leading international trade fair, which focussed on the trends, designers and new products for furniture and interior design.

“I wanted to create a three dimensional dream. A journey in the bedroom filled with humor. A futuristic bed, in which you feel light as a feather and free as if on cloud 9 (… Germans are only supposed to get as high as cloud 7). Quite contrary to other beds, the Cloud 7 bed does not appear static but rather brings movement into space. The Cloud 7 bed catches the eye and puts you in a state of good mood. It`s like dreaming yourself away in your favorite song – but in 3D. Music, that you can let yourself fall into, that absorbs you and sends you to a far away universe”, says designer Martina Münch about her creation, the Cloud 7 bed manufactured by Bretz.

A mélange made out of modern design, lightness and a touch of humor that convinces through joy of life and a dream of distant lands.

The “Bell Table” (manufacturer: ClassiCon) by Sebastian Herkner is about to turn our perceptual habits on their head, using the lightweight, fragile material of glass as base for a metal top that seems to float above it.

Hand-blown in the traditional manner using a wooden mould, the transparent tinted glass base asserts a sculptural presence in space, contrasting intriguingly with the solid brass frame on top while also forming with it a harmonious unit recalling the curving silhouette of a bell.

With its appealing reflective surfaces and contrasting materials, the side table adds a distinctive touch to domestic interiors. Each table is handmade, meaning that small bubbles or bumps in the glass are not flaws but rather desirable characteristics marking each piece as unique.

Walter Knoll presents nonchalance de luxe with Jaan Living. Armchair, armchair récamière and upholstered bench naturally gather around the sofa. The extensions to the Jaan Living range create expansive living landscapes.

With spacious seat elements on a delicate framework – the hallmark of the award-winning range. The upholstered bench supplements the sofa – or works on its own in an entrée, lobby or gallery. Jaan Living is a lot of things – but not down-to-earth. It is far too elevated for that.

The armchair Lemon by Brühl: a spring awakening in the living room

The return to nature is playing an ever-greater role in almost all areas of modern life. Today’s interior architecture, for instance, is increasingly coming to resemble landscape compositions: carpets are being laid out like fields, abstract pieces of furniture stand in the room as solid as rocks, and we are sleeping amidst gently rolling hills of cushions and covers.

But the design of the furniture itself is also increasingly taking its cues from nature. “Lemon”, a new armchair by Kati Meyer-Brühl, likewise has its roots in the natural world.

With its elegant, organic, leaf-like segments it forms a silhouette that resembles a blooming flower bud. The armchair fans out into five elongated leaf-shaped sections which taper towards the top, giving the piece a crown-like contour.

With Lemon the upholsterer Brühl wants to present a refreshingly vital, decorative and unique piece of furniture that combines elementariness with Mediterranean flair, adding an exuberant air to living rooms and lobbies. Arranged in a group, the armchairs invite companionship.
