The imm cologne‘s talent show D3 Design talents is a constant for trade visitors and anyone with an interest in design. The exhibition of winning entries from the international newcomer competition D3 Contest is particularly popular. Thanks to the good framework conditions, the professional execution and the sophisticated presentation of the winners at the heart of the imm cologne, the D3 Contest is highly regarded amongst established designers as well. In particular, the trade fair’s commitment to supporting the participants and the selective presentation guarantee a first-class exhibition. At the coming furnishing fair, the platform for young designers will be celebrating its first two-digit anniversary.
For ten years now, the imm cologne has been providing young designers with a forum where they can present their ideas for furniture, home accessories, lighting, floor coverings, wallpapers, textiles and other forward-looking furnishing items to an international public: the D3 Contest. For the coming imm cologne, 671 products were entered from more than 40 countries – convincing evidence of the competition’s international standing.
The Interior Innovation Award is one of the most prestigious design prizes in the international furnishing sector – companies from all product categories of the sector are now invited to enter the competition at www.interior-innovation-award.com. imm cologne is the conceptual sponsor of the competition, which is hosted by the German Design Council.
Companies with products listed in the categories Furniture, Outdoor Products, Bathroom/Wellness, Office/Workplace, Building Fixtures, Walls/Floors/Ceilings, Luminaires, Textiles and last but not least products for Kitchen/Household may register for the competition until 7 November 2012.
The Interior Innovation Award – Best of Best 2013 label will be bestowed to 15 products overall; as an additional highlight three up-and-coming designers will be selected for the Interior Innovation Award at the D3 Contest 2013 talent show. The prize winners will be announced at the imm cologne opening ceremony on 13 January 2013.

After its successful premiere in 2012, “Das Haus – Interiors on Stage” is set to continue at the imm cologne 2013. In Luca Nichetto‘s “Haus”, everything revolves around a centrally located living room that is intended to become the centre of a sustainable way of living that integrates nature.
The premiere of the new design installation format at the imm cologne was a huge success for both the trade fair and the designers. As guests of honour, designer couple Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien had the unique opportunity to blaze a trail for the future development of the series with their interpretation of this innovative new assignment. And that is precisely what they did: in their hands, “Das Haus – Interiors on Stage” became a crowd-puller that fully justified its location in the midst of Pure Village, the trade fair’s lively forum for interior design.
In particular, the new conceptual approach of adopting a less abstract stance than previous formats and instead aiming to furnish the artificial architectural framework in lifelike fashion was welcomed across the board.
Pure Editions now offers exhibitors a third dimension for presenting themselves. Here too, the architecture is consistently designed but in this case also totally open, providing a stage for a strong statement by visionary brands. (photo: Koelnmesse GmbH)
At the international interior design show in Cologne, exclusive design brands have always been keen on coming together to form inspiring clusters. As a result, during the last imm cologne, some exhibitors had to move their style icons a little closer together in the legendary design stronghold of the No. 11 halls. The Cologne fair therefore wants to set aside even more space for this segment in future – with a new level in Hall 3, a new format and new exhibition concepts. Because for both the trade fair organisers and their exhibitors, it isn’t just the quantity of space that counts, but the quality of that space as well.
The design brands’ presentations also attract a great deal of attention from visitors. This is where they can find concentrated clusters of innovations, unusual product displays and lifestyle. It was precisely because of this group of exhibitors’ uncompromising design orientation that the organisers decided to name the segment “Pure”. Since the show moved into the new exhibition halls, anybody who wants to get an idea of the latest original interior design ideas and avant-garde designs from the wide spectrum on offer at the imm cologne has been able to find what he is looking for under this name in the three halls 11.1, 11.2 and 11.3.
A stool like a fibrous primeval mushroom, magnetically grown; a lamp made of folded concrete; furniture made of recycled plastic used like solid wood: materials that have undergone unusual processing and been put together or moulded in innovative ways. Visitors to the [D³] Contest exhibition will look for conventional furniture in vain.
What they will see instead are new interpretations of familiar object typologies and experiments with new furniture concepts: industrial warehouse shelves in the most delicate of veneer thicknesses and drawers that only reveal their precious interior by means of a chain-operated opening mechanism. There is nothing incidental about any of the furniture, accessories, lamps or furnishing elements – everything has been thought through down to the last detail and deliberately discourages superficial contemplation.
Mid-January is nearly here again. Furniture manufacturers, designers and interior designers will once again be turning the halls of the imm cologne into a huge exhibition area. The D3 Talents design platform has long ceased to be an “inside tip” and is now widely regarded as a “must” for anyone with an interest in design. For at the D3 talent forum, visitors can discover products that are still waiting for their future: experimental designs, original creations and clever new construction principles developed by the most promising newcomers the design scene has to offer.
“With D3, we deliberately offer young designers a unique opportunity to present themselves to international experts, the media and companies,” says Gerald Böse, CEO of Koelnmesse. “Our commitment goes down well with the international design scene too. At the end of the day, it’s precisely this encounter between experimental design and the market-driven offerings of the furniture industry, the contrast between the commercial and the experimental, that makes the imm cologne so attractive to so many people,” adds the imm cologne’s Creative Director Dick Spierenburg.
First-class design and a successfully interwoven mix of innovative brand and product presentations in an interdisciplinary arrangement – that’s what the imm cologne‘s Pure Village exhibition stands for. Next year it will be the meeting point for more than 50 interior design brands.
Firms like Thonet, Gandia Blasco, Mocoba or E15 will rub shoulders with bathroom furnishers like Kaldewei, Burgbad and Grohe, textile brands like Creation Baumann, floor specialists like Parador and Carpet Concept and home entertainment pioneers like Loewe. Inspiration is guaranteed – en masse!
With Pure Village, imm cologne art director Dick Spierenburg has created a place for design and interior visions. Pure Village is different because, instead of unfurling a multitude of huge brand worlds hidden behind high walls, it presents the best ideas and visions from both big names and smaller labels in the intimacy of a village-like setting. “Our aim is to convey lots of impressions, lots of different approaches, lots of discussions and lots of juxtapositions between various areas of the home as well as between different products and thus generate a suspenseful atmosphere for visitors,” says the art director of his concept.
