[D3] Design talents: imm cologne’s competition format for promoting newcomers celebrates 10th anniversary

d3_2012 The imm cologne‘s talent show D3 Design talents is a constant for trade visitors and anyone with an interest in design. The exhibition of winning entries from the international newcomer competition D3 Contest is particularly popular. Thanks to the good framework conditions, the professional execution and the sophisticated presentation of the winners at the heart of the imm cologne, the D3 Contest is highly regarded amongst established designers as well. In particular, the trade fair’s commitment to supporting the participants and the selective presentation guarantee a first-class exhibition. At the coming furnishing fair, the platform for young designers will be celebrating its first two-digit anniversary.

For ten years now, the imm cologne has been providing young designers with a forum where they can present their ideas for furniture, home accessories, lighting, floor coverings, wallpapers, textiles and other forward-looking furnishing items to an international public: the D3 Contest. For the coming imm cologne, 671 products were entered from more than 40 countries – convincing evidence of the competition’s international standing.

imm cologne presents “European Lifestyles”: more than an insider tip

The innovations at the coming imm cologne (14th to 20th January 2013) include the new trade fair theme “European Lifestyles” in Hall 1, where manufacturers from Rumania, Estonia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia will be presenting themselves in attractive national pavilions.

There will also be a joint presentation by young, innovative companies from Germany, who will be presenting themselves to a broad audience here for the first time as part of a sponsorship project initiated by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. They will be joined by a number of strong individual exhibitors from various countries, including Germany, Portugal and Italy.

With the new “European Lifestyles” concept, the trade fair has created a new attraction in Hall 1 for all buyers who are just as interested in compelling quality and sales-boosting design as they are in a convincing price-performance ratio.

Seven international curators were invited to select design talents from seven key regions. The open brief presented each curator with the task of selecting designers that would reinterpret the classic textile Hallingdal, the founding textile of Kvadrat, in a modern context.

Hallingdal was designed by Nanna Ditzel in 1965. Today more than forty-five years later it remains one of Kvadrat’s best-selling products and has earned its place as a design classic. A familiar fixture in public spaces, hospitals, schools and homes, Hallingdal 65 is a textile that holds many associations for many people. In a celebration of Hallingdal 65’s longevity Kvadrat has invited a new generation of designers to create entirely new works using the textile and explore new applications for the fabric. For this purpose seven curators have nominated their pick of emerging design talents all around the world under the guidance of Patrizia Moroso & Giulio Ridolfo.

D3 Contest: commited to the promotion of young designers from all over the world

Mid-January is nearly here again. Furniture manufacturers, designers and interior designers will once again be turning the halls of the imm cologne into a huge exhibition area. The D3 Talents design platform has long ceased to be an “inside tip” and is now widely regarded as a “must” for anyone with an interest in design. For at the D3 talent forum, visitors can discover products that are still waiting for their future: experimental designs, original creations and clever new construction principles developed by the most promising newcomers the design scene has to offer.

“With D3, we deliberately offer young designers a unique opportunity to present themselves to international experts, the media and companies,” says Gerald Böse, CEO of Koelnmesse. “Our commitment goes down well with the international design scene too. At the end of the day, it’s precisely this encounter between experimental design and the market-driven offerings of the furniture industry, the contrast between the commercial and the experimental, that makes the imm cologne so attractive to so many people,” adds the imm cologne’s Creative Director Dick Spierenburg.

Good style and humour are by no means mutually exclusive – burgbad designs new bathrooms

With its latest ad campaign, German furniture and furnishing concept manufacturer burgbad is breaking new ground when it comes to marketing sanitaryware. The drawings of French illustrator Jean-Philippe Delhomme are intended to appeal to a sophisticated target group for whom good style and humour are by no means mutually exclusive.

We generally encounter fittings, bathtubs, rainfall showers, washbasins and even toilets as highly polished stars set against a perfectly styled backdrop. Or as elemental water dispensers that bring us closer to nature. And indeed, the product collections from burgbad come across as sometimes architecturally reticent, sometimes sculptural-looking objects for the design-oriented bathroom. But in the new ad campaign, they are not the stars but merely the backdrop – for the people who live with them. “The product is an element around which the characters can play,” says illustrator Jean-Philippe Delhomme of the ad visuals he has created. “I’m not trying to isolate the product, but rather integrate it into the scene, as part of the character’s life.” weiterlesen…
