D3 Contest: commited to the promotion of young designers from all over the world

Mid-January is nearly here again. Furniture manufacturers, designers and interior designers will once again be turning the halls of the imm cologne into a huge exhibition area. The D3 Talents design platform has long ceased to be an “inside tip” and is now widely regarded as a “must” for anyone with an interest in design. For at the D3 talent forum, visitors can discover products that are still waiting for their future: experimental designs, original creations and clever new construction principles developed by the most promising newcomers the design scene has to offer.

“With D3, we deliberately offer young designers a unique opportunity to present themselves to international experts, the media and companies,” says Gerald Böse, CEO of Koelnmesse. “Our commitment goes down well with the international design scene too. At the end of the day, it’s precisely this encounter between experimental design and the market-driven offerings of the furniture industry, the contrast between the commercial and the experimental, that makes the imm cologne so attractive to so many people,” adds the imm cologne’s Creative Director Dick Spierenburg.

Good style and humour are by no means mutually exclusive – burgbad designs new bathrooms

With its latest ad campaign, German furniture and furnishing concept manufacturer burgbad is breaking new ground when it comes to marketing sanitaryware. The drawings of French illustrator Jean-Philippe Delhomme are intended to appeal to a sophisticated target group for whom good style and humour are by no means mutually exclusive.

We generally encounter fittings, bathtubs, rainfall showers, washbasins and even toilets as highly polished stars set against a perfectly styled backdrop. Or as elemental water dispensers that bring us closer to nature. And indeed, the product collections from burgbad come across as sometimes architecturally reticent, sometimes sculptural-looking objects for the design-oriented bathroom. But in the new ad campaign, they are not the stars but merely the backdrop – for the people who live with them. “The product is an element around which the characters can play,” says illustrator Jean-Philippe Delhomme of the ad visuals he has created. “I’m not trying to isolate the product, but rather integrate it into the scene, as part of the character’s life.” weiterlesen…

The forum for upcoming designers and colleges, D3 Design talents, will be taking place in familiar form in 2011 too – with the three areas D³ Professionals, D³ Contest and D³ Schools. For students and designers who are still at the outset of their career, D³ Design talents offers a unique opportunity to present themselves to both professional circles and the media.

Over the last few years, D³ Design talents has evolved into a real highlight for visitors to the imm cologne, bringing fresh impetus to the interior design sector with creative ideas, abundant talent and fresh perspectives.

The compact format of the D³ Contest has proved particularly attractive – perhaps because it crystallises the creative potential of the next designer generation into concentrated form. The exhibition is curated by the German Design Council – the best 30 works amongst the numerous entries are selected for the show and the best three contestants presented with an award. All students and graduates who qualified less than three years ago are eligible to enter their prototypes. The D³ Contest aims to give young designers a platform where they can present their interpretations of the furniture, lighting, home textiles and accessories of the future to an international public.

News about [D³] Design Talents

In 2011 D³ Design talents will be staged for the sixth time at imm cologne. This event for young designers, which consists of the three areas D³ Professionals, D³ Contest and D³ Schools, will generate momentum for the interior design of tomorrow. The inspiring and visionary designs that are presented here will be flanked and supported by other events and installations.

One innovation that will be introduced next January will be a form of presentation that aims to connect young designers even more closely with the trade fair activities. The designs of the winners of the D3 Contest will be presented in the pure village area rather than at the previous venue in the lower area of Hall 3. The stands of the D³ Professionals will also be placed nearby, in a “neighbourhood” of their own located one level higher in Hall 3.2. The intimate atmosphere and well-planned trade fair architecture of the pure village exhibition format, which was introduced in 2010, offers an ideal framework for the firework of ideas and unconventional designs generated by the next generation of interior designers.
