[D3] Contest: special exhibition and contest for young designers at imm cologne 2012

Koelnmesse has commissioned the Rat für Formgebung/German Design Council to act as overseers and organizers of the young designers’ exhibition and prize at imm cologne 2012, the international furnishing show, which is named D3 Contest since five years and was formerly known as inspired by cologne.

Up to 30 new product designs, the work of design students and young designers from around the world, will be preselected and featured in a special exhibition for the ninth time. The jury for the design competition, the Interior Innovation Award 2012, (due to be held at imm cologne) will then choose the three most talented up-and-coming international designers for 2012 from these nominees.

Interior Innovation Award 2011 open to all – don’t miss the deadline (12.11.2010)!

As of this year, participation in the Interior Innovation Award is no longer restricted to the imm cologne’s exhibitors. By opening the competition up, the award is intended to reflect the international furniture fair’s importance for the industry, the entire spectrum of which is represented at the Cologne show.

With its focus on innovative excellence in all product areas, the competition is a reflection of the industry’s huge inventiveness. “In future, we want the Interior Innovation Award to be an even stronger expression of the efficacy and innovative spirit of companies operating in the furniture and interior design market,” says CEO of Koelnmesse Gerald Böse in explanation of the modified concept. Limiting participation to exhibitors seemed to stand in the way of this aim. “That’s why we decided to abolish the official restriction on participation so as to better communicate the commendableness of the award-winning innovations. And since the imm cologne depicts the entire spectrum of this market, we’re expecting some top-class results from the Interior Innovation Award again.”

Johanna Grawunder isn’t easy to pin down. She builds houses, designs interiors and creates classic industrial products for clients like Boffi, Flos, B&B or WMF. But above all, she creates exclusive furniture and lighting for galleries in Europe and the USA, often integrating LEDs and seemingly dematerialising the forms.

For her, light is an important medium for designing the interior as part of the whole. Nor does lighting always have to be a stand-alone item, believes Johanna Grawunder. Integrated into furniture, it’s simply there – and takes on a whole new quality.

The architect from California began her career in Ettore Sottsass’ Milan studio in 1985 and was involved with some of his most prestigious architecture and interior design projects.

imm cologne 2010 – Remarks by Gerald Böse, Chief Executive Officer of Koelnmesse GmbH, at the European Press Conference on imm cologne 2010, in Cologne on 13th May 2009

Ladies and gentlemen,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you today to Cologne for our press conference on imm cologne. Thank you for taking the time to find out what’s new at imm cologne.

Ladies and gentlemen, this year’s imm cologne has had a polarizing effect. There have been many positive comments about it, but I won’t hide the fact that there has also been criticism. It was therefore all the more important to reflect on various issues after the fair was over. Specifically, this means we must ask ourselves what the imm cologne of the future has to look like in order to retain and enhance its value for customers. What kinds of activities will be in tune with the times? In short, we have to let the exhibitors and visitors know just why imm cologne is the best option.
