What is the beautiful new Gandia Blasco sofa by Stefan Diez doing on the street outside Cologne’s Kolumba Museum? Are the people walking along the promenade of the Rheinau Harbour really allowed to settle down and make themselves comfortable on the latest upholstered furniture from Brühl? Have the little leaf-shaped tables on the riverbank always been there? And when did designer furniture like the FreiFrau barstools start hanging out in a Kölsch pub? read more…

Escaping from the hectic pace of everyday life, shifting down a gear and enjoying the evenings and weekends in your very own green oasis: for a growing number of people, the garden, patio or balcony is their favourite place for getting away from it all for a while. And that means having a comfy place to sit too.
The Nordic maritime look with its clear but cosy shapes is particularly popular for outdoor furniture right now. And in view of Scandinavia’s coastal climate, it’s perfectly acceptable for the tables and chairs to look a little rough. When it comes to patterns, stripes and various shades of blue are popular. At the same time, romanticism is experiencing a renaissance: a growing number of manufacturers are going for a dreamy look. The trend is dominated by playful creations and gently flowing forms, along with combinations of charming details, floral designs and old-style patterns. The City Style is also featuring on the outdoor stage as a countertrend to the romantic look and favours flamboyant, design-oriented shapes. Loungers and couches are characterised by a puristic straightforwardness and elegance and many of the material combinations include stainless steel. When it comes to colours, white, sand and brown shades will continue to dominate in 2011/12. And green is a must. The trend colour of the last fashion season is now conquering balconies and patios too, with manufacturers banking on bright shades like lime and apple green. read more…

“Sensational. It was our best interzum ever,” was the general consensus amongst exhibitors at the end of this year’s interzum. With 52,400 trade visitors from 147 countries, the leading international trade fair for the furniture supplier industry was able to announce growth of 13 percent as compared to the previous event in 2009. The internationality of the visitor structure, traditionally always high anyway, increased significantly this year with a plus of 24 percent.
“I’m absolutely thrilled. What’s been happening here over the last few days is incredible. For four days, the exhibitors have been showing what I can only describe as a firework display. The industry has been celebrating itself – with good reason,” concludes Frank Haubold, product manager of interzum and director of the imm cologne. “With this interzum, Koelnmesse has definitely underlined its position as a beacon for the furniture industry. I don’t believe there is any other trade fair venue in the world where three absolute leading events for the respective sectors take place so successfully, in such concentrated form and in such a brief space of time. We are creating precedents for an extremely promising future,” says a visibly satisfied Gerald Böse, CEO of Koelnmesse.
This year’s interzum was the international meeting point for the supplier industry. The mood was extremely good, exhibitors were able to make new contacts and boost business. And visitors had the opportunity to get a comprehensive overview of what the sector has to offer. There were sophisticated newly developed products on show in all segments.

imm cologne 2010 – Remarks by Gerald Böse, Chief Executive Officer of Koelnmesse GmbH, at the European Press Conference on imm cologne 2010, in Cologne on 13th May 2009
Ladies and gentlemen,
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you today to Cologne for our press conference on imm cologne. Thank you for taking the time to find out what’s new at imm cologne.
Ladies and gentlemen, this year’s imm cologne has had a polarizing effect. There have been many positive comments about it, but I won’t hide the fact that there has also been criticism. It was therefore all the more important to reflect on various issues after the fair was over. Specifically, this means we must ask ourselves what the imm cologne of the future has to look like in order to retain and enhance its value for customers. What kinds of activities will be in tune with the times? In short, we have to let the exhibitors and visitors know just why imm cologne is the best option.
