Furnishing Cologne: New furniture arrives in Cologne and gets photographed above the city’s rooftops

Perched on the observation terrace at Cologne Airport, the new Ligne Roset sofa Nils by designer Didier Gomez seems to be waiting for the visitors who will soon be flocking to the city’s international furnishing show. The scenography is part of an imm cologne initiative that involved photographing newly rolled-out furniture in urban Cologne.

In the second year of the “Furnishing Cologne” initiative, the motto for the series of photographs was “Above the city’s rooftops”. And that’s how Artek’s “Stool 60″ stools (by Alvar Aalto, in the new Anniversary Edition) came to be standing on the roof of a factory building in the morning sun as if they were keeping a lookout or inviting guests to take a rest. The motifs range from Miele’s new wine cooler KWT 6832 SGS – an allusion to the LivingKitchen fair that takes place parallel to the imm cologne – all the way to Vitra’s re-edition of the Eames Rocking Chair, which was photographed from an unusual perspective above the roofs of Cologne city centre.

With “plot” Brunner presents a modular piece of seating furniture for a relaxed way of sitting. The young Berlin design studio osko+deichmann created the space-creating, modular piece of seating furniture for various sitting positions, which can be integrated into offices, foyers or lounges like a natural “loungescape”.

The open concept of use, which is based on a square module, fits in well with those who do not only want to sit but lean against, move, interact and communicate in a relaxed way. “We wanted to create a product which the user handles in a different way. You should feel free and mobile – this releases productive energy and promotes creativity,” Dr. Marc Brunner, Managing Director of the family business, is convinced. The concept of plot offers seats adjustable on three levels and is about to interpret the function of arm and back rest in a new way.

“How do we sit, when we are on the road? Do we wait or do we work? Do we meet and interact? Or do we rest?” These questions led osko+deichmann to the unconventional design of plot. On the basis of a square module, six combinations of seats and rests can be realised. The middle level – the arm rest – was designed in a flexible way and can be repositioned without the use of tools.

Furnishing Cologne – part 11: New products Bahir by COR and bookless by interlübke

World travellers in Cologne: This year COR is sending a deeply relaxed piece of seating furniture to Cologne from the other side of the Alps: Bahir isn’t just for sitting on, it’s perfect for lounging, sprawling and stretching as well. A place where you can spread out and snuggle up, a freedom zone for slouching and reading, gaming and surfing the net. In order to make all this possible, Swiss designer Jörg Boner created Bahir in the form of a big, inviting shell, abolishing the classic division into seat and backrest. As a result, Bahir is not so much a piece of seating furniture as a private space where you can settle down with cushions, blankets, your partner, some cookies or the kids, depending on how the mood takes you. It’s good to know that the quilted cover can be taken off and cleaned in next to no time. The seams emphasise the clear basic structure of the sofa. The Bahir series also includes an armchair. An ottoman puts the finishing touches to the collection.

With bookless, interlübke transfers the idea of conventional storage concepts into a gallery system for domestic settings. The bookless range aims to shine a spotlight on the beautiful things in life and can be configured as a movable partition, a floor-to-ceiling shelf or a floating wall element. Its elegant glass surfaces, filigree carcass depths and LED lighting are designed to convey a sense of transparency and lightness. One particularly sophisticated detail: the units stand at a distance of 6 cm to the wall, enlarging the surrounding light cone and enhancing the three-dimensional effect of the hovering modules. Developed for both domestic and office settings, the multifunctional concept can adapt to almost any layout, integrate digital media systems and be used in combination with other product ranges.

Sultry sights in Rheinau Harbour: The name says it all: avec plaisir, the new two-seater sofa from Brühl, doesn’t just have charisma and the flair to become a classic, it’s exceedingly comfortable as well. The sculptural, organic shape conveys a sense of security even before you take a seat. Whilst you could be forgiven for thinking that every conceivable sofa shape has already been produced, the experimental design of avec plaisir nevertheless manages to blend form and function into a veritable feel-good factor. The trendy sofa was created by young designer Kati Meyer-Brühl. It is available in a choice of different fabrics and features the kind of top-quality craftsmanship its unusual shape requires.

The human factor as the measure of all things – seating comfort made by COR

Making upholstered furniture is an art form in its own right. And when it comes to seating comfort, ergonomics are an important discipline. The right seat heights and depths and the materials used play a major role. In addition, observations on human growth development are becoming increasingly important. Consequently, in light of the fact that, on average, people are getting taller, COR raised the seat height of its sofas by two centimetres several years ago.

A host of very different needs have to be considered – not only in terms of the construction but with regard to choosing the right sofa as well. Besides weight and height, the user’s personal preferences also play a key role: some like to sit close to the ground, others like to rise above things. And whilst some prefer a soft, flat surface, others like a firmer seat with a high backrest. When it comes to the upholstery, the personal feelgood factor is crucial. “Trust your instincts,” advises COR’s head of marketing Berthold Strüve, “Try out various backrests and seats. imm cologne 2011 is the biggest upholstered furniture show in the world: Comfort shows new innovations and upholstered furniture trends

Curious about the new sofa fashions, dinner sofas, wellness armchairs or ultra-flexible seating ensembles? Then you can’t afford to miss the imm cologne! From 18 to 23 January 2011, visitors to the international furniture fair can enjoy the biggest upholstered furniture show in the world on the grounds of koelnmesse exhibition centre. Approx. one third of the total exhibition space will be occupied by the Comfort segment, where international sofa producers will be showing their latest seating creations. No fewer than four halls have been dedicated to this section of the imm cologne: 2.1, 3.1, 6 and 10.2.

Karl Sommermeyer, executive partner at upholstered furniture makers Himolla (Taufkirchen), on the importance of the annual presentation: “The Cologne fair is the biggest furniture fair in the world – and we will do whatever we can to make sure it stays that way. The standards set in 2010 give us every reason to believe 2011 will be just as good!”
